Financial Advisors Foresee Continued Growth of QROPS

Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes, or QROPS, have been offered as an alternative wealth management pension solution for expats since 2006. Despite some initial teething problems with QROPS, wealth management advisors have this year predicted that the popularity of QROPS will increase, as more expats turn to them as an alternative to their UK pension.

As confidence grows in QROPS, more wealth management advisors are offering in-depth guides and information regarding the benefits that QROPS can present to expats. New Zealand QROPS – Code of Conduct Discussed

If you are an expat with an interest in making sure that your wealth management strategy provides the best benefits or you, then you have probably heard of Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes or QROPS. In response to the complexity of QROPS and to enable those seeking wealth management solutions to make sound decisions, some jurisdictions have introduced a code of conduct to ensure that QROPS advisors and providers are acting in the best interests of those wishing to transfer their pensions into a QROPS fund.

One such QROPS jurisdiction is New Zealand - where they are developing a voluntary code of conduct to help disperse negative comments that had been made about the New Zealand QROPS market over recent years. This voluntary code of conduct will help to bolster the reputation of New Zealand QROPS and is a welcome move in the opinion of professional wealth management advisors.

QROPS – The New Pension Regime

On 6th April 2011, amendments and additional guidelines were announced regarding the UK pension tax legislation. It is important to consider how these changes could have an effect on UK pension holders, who have transferred or are considering transferring their pension funds into a QROPS or Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme.

The main impact of the amended tax legislation for QROPS holders concerns taking benefits if you have been an expat for less than five years. You may be liable to pay UK income tax on these benefits. The best way to see if these new legislations will affect your own QROPS position is to speak to a wealth management advisor. As with any matter of wealth management, it is important to seek professional advice and this is definitely the case when it comes to QROPS. QROPS can still offer fantastic benefits for expats, as opposed to a UK pension, and qualified wealth management advice will help to make sure that you are making sound decisions regarding your pensions, QROPS and any other aspect of expat wealth management.

QROPS Will Grow Regardless of Legal Reforms

April 2011 saw the introduction of new legal reforms regarding flexible drawdown. This created fear within the wealth management industry that these reforms would have a negative effect on QROPS. Chief Executive of Guardian Wealth Management, David Howell, shared his opinions with the Overseas Property Professional magazine on how he feels the QROPS market may or may not be affected.

QROPS can be a great strategic wealth management move for expats looking to gain greater advantages from their pension funds. QROPS can provide an opportunity to avoid the high taxation that affects UK pension holders, as well as many other key benefits. QROPS can offer tax-free withdrawals of up to a massive 30% for expats who have been living outside of the UK for five years or more. QROPS also negate inheritance tax liability and provide much more flexibility in terms of investments.

Expats Return Rates Increase

With their experience of providing financial advice to expats across the world, Guardian Wealth Management recognises that the current problems with the weak pound are creating huge problems for expats’ financial security. With expat pensioners being affected by this and fewer work opportunities for expats in even the most popular destinations, it is predicted that we will see a large number of expats choosing to rethink their wealth management strategy and lifestyle and return to the UK.

There is already evidence to suggest that many expats are looking at alternative wealth management solutions to provide a more stable lifestyle, with increasingly larger amounts of money being repatriated into the UK. Recent years have already seen many expats return, seeking a more positive financial future than their foreign lifestyles can currently offer.

New Zealand QROPS will benefit if voluntary code of conduct goes ahead

New Zealand QROPS have been the subject of negative press, with some QROPS providers being accused of mis-selling and some financial advisers suspected of unscrupulous activity. Strategi, a compliance consultancy company based in New Zealand, are working alongside financial advisers to come up with a new, voluntary code of conduct.

The intention is that by introducing this code of conduct, New Zealand QROPS and financial advisers will be able to repair the damage done by the bad press and help to boost New Zealand QROPS’ reputation. Guardian Wealth Management are supporting this positive move and welcome any reforms which will help to elevate the professional standing of wealth management and financial advice providers.

Expat QROPS - Get Advice ASAP

When it comes to matters of wealth management, getting professional advice sooner rather than later is always prudent. This applies to any financial planning matter, but perhaps even more so when it comes to transferring your UK pension into a QROPS. QROPS can offer huge benefits to expats planning on living and working outside of the UK – but you need to make sure you get the right advice in time to act.

While there are plenty of information sources online, you still need to speak to a financial advisor who is familiar with the QROPS market and the country that you’re going to be resident in. Your ability to transfer your pension funds into a QROPS in order to gain from tax benefits may be limited if you don’t get the right wealth management advice as quickly as possible.

QROPS Information - Get it Right

If you’re an expat considering transferring your UK pension into a QROPS (Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme), it’s absolutely vital that you ensure you get professional advice before you make any decisions. Tax legislation is constantly being amended and updated, so you need to make sure that you are armed with the latest knowledge.

Tax laws need to be considered when thinking about QROPS as an alternative pension plan – that applies to UK tax laws as well as both the laws of the country you reside in and the laws of the country where your QROPS will be held. Without this key information, you are at risk of making the wrong choice in regards to your expat QROPS.

Guardian Wealth Management | QROPS | Financial Advice

Over recent years QROPS have been seen as an attractive pension alternative for expats who have previously lived and worked in the UK and have UK-based pensions and assets. As QROPS have become better known and more established, more information regarding the benefits of QROPS for expats can be found online and through reputable financial advisors. This increase in the popularity of QROPS as a pension investment option seems to have been noticed by financial advisors across a number of jurisdictions, according to the findings of a recent poll by Skandia International.

The published results of last year’s poll by Skandia showed that only three quarters of the advisors consulted thought that QROPS business would remain even or increase. In contrast, this year’s results point towards a definite up-turn in the popularity of QROPS. A massive 96% of advisors taking part in the poll believe that this coming year will see the number of expats taking up QROPS as alternative pension investments increase or stay at a similar level.

Guardian Wealth Management | QROPS Code of Conduct | New Zealand

Guardian Wealth Management offer financial advice services across Europe and the Middle East, including wealth management advice for QROPS. As always, we aim to keep our clients informed of changes in regulations and processes that affect wealth management services. Here we will take a look at the proposed new code of conduct being discussed by QROPS providers in New Zealand.

In March this year, the Guernsey Association of Pension Providers introduced a voluntary code of conduct, outlining the rules and standards that QROPS providers should adopt when writing QROPS for the transfer of funds from UK pensions. It was a move made to help simplify the process, so that consumers would know what to expect from QROPS providers and how the schemes should be handled.
